  • Out of Memory Error with Windows 10?

I recently installed windows 10, and ever since I have done this I am unable to launch the game with UOSteam. Every time I attempt to do so I am met with the dreaded "Out of memory" error, and can't get the client to launch.

I've tried setting priority in the task manager to allocate more memory to the game, I've tried closing down everything other than the essentials (anti-virus, etc), and still no luck with getting the game to actually launch. I believe I have 8gigs of DDR4, a GTX 770 2gb GDDR5 video card. I can run just about everything, and anything, but this now.

Anyone have a suggestion or a work around to solve this? Would like to get back into playing a bit, but this seems to be quite the hang up for me :-P

If anyone else gets this problem with Windows 10 and UOSteam:

I have done following things, maybe one, or all together solved the problem:

#1 Set the virtual memory from [3x RAM]-[3x RAM]...I have 8 GB ram so I set 24 GB to 24 GB
#2 Try to delete/deactivate all useless programs. I deactivated skype for instance...if I need this program I can start it manually
#3 Start UOSteam and run as administrator

Run UOSteam in compatibility-mode for Win 7/8/xp or Vista

and sometimes this helps: try restarting the pc

You might look at the troubleshooting section and documentation on the UO Steam website

      Read how to disable defender?

I have found that running the client in compatibility mode for windows XP SP 2 has had a 50/50 fix ratio for mostplayers who are experiencing these issues. Also make sure you run it as an Admin

After doing a bit of research, I found this post on UO Evolution's Forum. Here is the repost and link:

Windows has multiple kinds of memory, some of them have more restrictive limits than others.

For example, there are User and GDI heaps. You can run out of these heaps long before you run out of physical or virtual memory. This is particularly bad if your software has resource leaks. If you run a lot of applications, especially a lot of gui or graphic intensive ones, you can run out of these resource heaps.

The only real solution is to shut down stuff you're not using, even though you still have memory available. If it's a resource leak, you may even have to reboot to get all your heap memory back.

How to fix high memory usage in Windows 10

Step-1: Download and install the Windows Driver kit

Step-2: Go to Start menu from the Windows key and open Command Prompt. Right-click on the resulting icon and select Run as Administrator from the drop-down menu

Step-3: Type cd C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits8.1Toolsx64 and press Enter to go to the directory in the command prompt where WDK was installed

Step-4: Type poolmon.exe then press Enter. When the utility opens up, press P to sort via pooltype then B to sort it according to number of bytes

Step-5: Note down the pooltag of the item which is using a majority of the memory. Open another command prompt to check which driver the tag belongs to. For this type f indstr / s then the tag which you have noted

Step-6: The command will point to a specific sys file. Open the file properties to check which driver the file belongs to. When you find out the driver, head over to the Microsoft site to download the official driver for Windows 10

Hopefully, these steps will address the memory issue on your Windows 10 powered PC. Microsoft has also outlined a few tips for preventing low memory problems in Windows 10.

Runtime Broker is using too much memory

          • Runtime Broker is a Windows process in Task Manager that helps manage permissions on your PC for apps from Windows Store. It should only use a few megabytes of memory, but in some cases, a faulty app might cause Runtime Broker to use up to a gigabyte of RAM or more.
          • If your RAM use is high and your PC is running slowly, an app may be the cause of the problem. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and then, on the Processes tab, check to see how much memory Runtime Broker is using. If it’s using more than 15% of your memory, you probably have an issue with an app on your PC. To stop Runtime Broker from using so much memory, select Runtime Broker in the list, select End task to close Runtime Broker, and then restart your computer.

What Causes the Windows 10 High Memory/RAM/CPU Usage?

Less RAM of your computer is not the cause. Users having 4GB of RAM have less complaints, while more and more users with 8GB and even 16GB of RAM have experienced high RAM usage problems after updating to Windows 10. There are several key reasons why the memory usage runs out after installing Windows 10.

Memory leak. Windows 10 is experiencing driver incompatibility issues. A faulty or outdated driver can lead to a Memory leak.

Windows 10 and the applications you have installed on it needs a few more RAM memory to operate

Registry hack settings can lead to high RAM usage on Windows 10.
This issue may cause computer crashing, freezing, and running slower and slower. Bad performance. Luckily, there are easy solutions to solve this high memory/RAM/CPU usage issue on Windows 10.

Getting a Windows Virtual Memory Error when starting Ultima Online from UOSteam?

              1. Download: LargeAddressAware.exe

              Open the Program

              2. Select an Executable -- Select client.exe in your UO install directory.

              3. Check Box the Large Address Aware Flag!

              4. Click Save. Restart UOSteam and it should open Ultima Online fine.

Still having trouble? Manually make your Virtual Memory higher.
